Crazy Afternoon with Homework

With kids getting back to school, afternoons will now be filled with homework and activities. One mom from Bergen County, New Jersey, asks how to help get her kids organized to keep kids on track and get homework done!

Dear Stacey,
We are in the crazy phase of homework…..one 5th grader and one 3rd grader. I try so hard to keep the school supplies in order. We have more pencils and stationery stuff. Should I organize a spot in the kitchen just for these items?

Dear Anonymous,

Yes, when possible, always store things where you use them. Also, in the case of homework supplies, make it kid-friendly so your kids can help themselves to the supplies needed and put them back where they belong. This will make clean-up a lot faster.

Choose a space where you’ll keep the supplies. If possible, give them their own shelf or cabinet. I know some areas of the kitchen are already cramped for space, but consider items such as platters and serving pieces that aren’t used that frequently elsewhere so you can use the accessible space now.

Consider installing a pull-out drawer so you can fully utilize the cabinet space.

Here are some great organizing products that will help you keep supplies neatly housed.

  • Two-drawer unit for pencils, paper, glue, tape, etc. in one drawer and paper in the other.
  • Containers for finished artwork and school papers (one for each child) Assign one for each school year.
  • Cubby (near the entry/exit door) for book bags so when homework is completed it can be loaded into the bag and ready to go for the next day.

Consider a spot in the kitchen for a place to put permission slips and other paperwork that you need to sign. Transfer them to the book bag, if necessary once you’ve reviewed and signed, providing a special pocket for this type of paperwork.

Let us know how you did!
